Finding The Fix

Divorce involves a lot of problem solving. Dividing a life together presents endless problems, and the divorce process is essentially finding “solutions” to those problems in the form of legal outcomes. A solution-oriented divorce, therefore, is one focused on the best solutions to your problems. This is most easily accomplished using a team approach.

Divide and Conquer

Problem solving can be especially difficult when you are trying to do it with someone you disagree with. You may not disagree on all matters in your divorce. Chances are, however, you and your spouse do disagree on a few matters. Taking a solution-oriented approach to your divorce will require you both have a problem-solving mentality. Simply put, solving problems is easier with two people involved. Divorce is no exception. You can solve your divorce problems easier and faster if you work with your spouse instead of against.

So, how do you do this? Well, you must first identify your divorce problems.

Do you have children you need to develop a parenting plan for? Do you have assets and debts to divide? Does child support or alimony need to be established? Every divorce will feature its own unique set of problems. Once you identify your problems, you should discuss your problem-solving plan with your spouse. For example, if one of your problems is dividing your asset and debts, your can begin with creating an itemized list of all assets and debts and their values. Next, you can team up on working out a fair division for the separation agreement. Don’t get overwhelmed by the details. Create lists and include possible solutions.

Keep in mind; just because you should work as a team to solve your divorce problems doesn’t mean you won’t need help. Even the best teams need coaches. Make sure you find someone who can serve as a coach of sorts to help you and your spouse stay on track. You may be able to find an actual divorce coach, but you can also find guidance and encouragement from a mediator or collaborative divorce team. A mediator provides information and guidance while you find solutions to your divorce problems.
